TikTok AI Alive launches image-to-video for creators
TikTok just debuted AI Alive, an image-to-video tool for Stories that’s set to shift creative strategies—here’s how it works and what it means for creators.
TikTok is introducing a breakthrough feature: creators and brands can now transform static images into dynamic videos using the new AI Alive tool, first detailed in TikTok’s official announcement. This move signals a significant update for social content, offering fresh tools for storytelling within TikTok Stories.
AI Alive enables users to animate photos directly within the TikTok Stories camera. The tool scans chosen images and builds short videos by applying motion and creative enhancements—turning simple snapshots into immersive content in seconds.
Getting started is simple. From your Profile, tap your profile photo or access Stories from your inbox. Take a new photo or upload an existing one, then select the AI Alive button. Enter a text prompt or choose a suggestion, and TikTok’s AI will generate the video. For example, a beach photo might gain shifting skies and wave sounds, while a selfie could showcase subtle movements.
Highlights of the AI Alive rollout include:
Exclusively available for TikTok Stories
Animates environments and objects with AI-generated motion
Automatic labeling of AI-generated content
Videos take approximately one minute to generate
Drafts expire after 7 days
To support transparency, AI Alive automatically applies an "AI-generated" label to content. This disclosure remains visible even if videos are downloaded or shared off-platform.
In addition to visible labeling, TikTok notes that AI Alive stories will also have C2PA metadata embedded—this is a technical standard that helps others identify that the video is AI-generated, even if it leaves TikTok’s platform.
TikTok’s Community Guidelines apply to AI Alive content, and users can report suspicious posts. The app also provides notifications when video generation is complete and stores drafts temporarily.
According to TikTok, the company uses moderation technology to review the uploaded photo and the written AI generation prompt, as well as the final AI Alive video, before it’s shown to the creator. There’s a final safety check before an AI Alive story is shared, ensuring content does not violate platform policies.
While TikTok has previously introduced features like in-app text-to-image generation, AI Alive focuses specifically on Stories—a format competitors like Instagram and Snapchat haven’t yet matched for AI-powered image-to-video conversions. Instagram recently expanded its GenAI toolset for static images, while Snapchat is preparing its own AI video generation tool.
To create an AI Alive video, open the TikTok Story Camera and tap the blue plus button on the top of the Inbox page or Profile page. Then, choose a photo from your Story Album. You’ll find the AI Alive icon on the right side toolbar on the photo edit page—making the workflow intuitive and accessible.
For creators and brands, AI Alive simplifies repurposing existing photos into Stories content. This reduces reliance on advanced editing skills or third-party apps, potentially accelerating content production cycles.
The feature arrives alongside other TikTok updates like live-stream DM activations for lead generation, continuing the platform’s push to enhance creator tools. Future updates could introduce more animation styles and customization options.
As social platforms increasingly integrate generative AI, TikTok’s focus on ephemeral Stories content provides a controlled environment for testing these capabilities while maintaining user expectations for temporary sharing.
