Bluesky adds live stream indicators for creators and brands
Bluesky now lets select users highlight live Twitch or YouTube streams on their profiles—eyeing more real-time activity and creator engagement.
Select Bluesky users can now showcase when they’re live on external platforms, sparking new ways for creators and brands to build real-time audiences. The social app unveiled its latest test in an official announcement, aiming to bring more creator-centric features into its fast-evolving platform.
New link indicators for live streams
Bluesky’s update enables chosen creators to add a direct link to a live stream hosted elsewhere—such as YouTube or Twitch—right from their profile. When a stream is active, the user’s profile displays a "Live Now" badge, signaling followers that real-time content is on.
To use the feature, eligible users simply paste their third-party stream URL into their Bluesky profile settings. Anyone who spots the live badge can immediately click through for live coverage. At present, access is limited to a handful of accounts, but Bluesky plans to open the tool to a broader audience soon.
Here’s what’s introduced this week:
Live stream badge on user profiles for external platforms
Clickable links to YouTube, Twitch, and similar hosting options
Real-time activity notifications for select accounts
Why real-time features are a competitive must
Live content remains a top discussion driver on X (formerly Twitter). Platforms like Threads and Bluesky are racing to attract hyper-engaged communities. Recent trends show user loyalty and content habits are in flux, with real-time updates gaining ground.
Rather than host streams natively, Bluesky’s linking approach works as a lightweight solution. It brings visibility to creators’ live moments without the costs and complexity of building in-app video infrastructure. Early-stage limitations on who can use the tools help control quality as Bluesky refines its offering.
Opportunities and limits for creators and brands
For creators, the new indicators can funnel Bluesky followers over to owned channels—perfect for live launches, interviews, or Q&A sessions broadcast from Twitch, YouTube, or other hosts. Brands may find value in using Bluesky profiles as a launchpad for major events or time-sensitive promotions. Since it’s based on external links, content monetization and moderation still rely on those third-party networks.
The move may also help Bluesky stand out among text-first social options, as the landscape gets more crowded and specialized. However, overall adoption hinges on Bluesky’s ability to scale loyal communities and keep pace with aggressive rivals like Threads and X.
Looking ahead as new features expand
For now, only a select group of users and organizations can try out these features, but a wider rollout is planned. Creators wanting early access should watch for updates in their profile tools and stay tuned for company announcements.
Streamlining real-time discovery—without hosting video in-app—may prove an efficient way to carve out a niche, especially as user behaviors continue to shift.
