Monetizing live streams just got more engaging on YouTube. The platform is expanding its “gift goals” feature, aiming to boost viewer donations and energize audience participation, as reported by Social Media Today. This rollout reinforces YouTube’s push to turn live broadcasting into a richer revenue channel for creators and brands.
Creators in the U.S. can now set donation targets during live broadcasts—a tool first piloted for Super Chat. Participants are incentivized to hit these goals within a set timeframe, often unlocking creator rewards or recognition when the milestone is reached. The feature encourages playful competition among viewers eager to be recognized as top supporters.
New: Interactive Gift Effects in Live Streams
Alongside gift goals, YouTube is introducing new interactive gifts powered by Jewels—which can be purchased in-app and exchanged for digital stickers that show up during live streams. Now, viewers have five new interactive options to make their donations stand out: “Cat ears,” “Good job,” “Flower crown,” “Celebrate,” and “Royal crown.” These character and environment-based effects appear on-screen for 8 to 15 seconds when viewers redeem Jewels through the gift picker, providing a fun and attention-getting way to support creators. The new interactive gifts are marked with a purple sparkle icon in the gift picker and are rolling out to eligible U.S. channels this week.
The main updates in this expansion include:
- Gift goals for all vertical live streams on mobile
- Customizable goal amounts and timeframes
- Visual progress indicators during streaming
- Instant notifications for supporters when a goal is hit
- Integration with other live donation tools on YouTube
- New interactive “gift effects” for live streams that visually overlay on the video for 8–15 seconds when gifting Jewels
Previously, these interactive donation goals were limited to select formats or features like Super Chat. By enabling them across more live streams, YouTube is betting on the power of gamification to keep audiences engaged and encourage regular giving.
This move builds on previous engagement efforts, such as leaderboards ranking top supporters and the new ‘Jewels’ donation mechanic now rolling out. The combination of visible recognition for donations and time-bound challenges is a formula already proven effective on other platforms, notably Twitch’s hype trains and donation alerts.
Update: Easier Sharing for Community Posts
YouTube isn’t only innovating in live streams. It recently began offering social sharing options for Community updates, making it easier for creators to link to and promote their channel’s Community Posts across other platforms. Channel Communities serve as a discussion-board space, letting creators and fans interact more like a social network than traditional video comment sections. With enhanced sharing, creators can promote engagement by linking to specific posts, sparking more conversation and connection even beyond YouTube.
The interactive donation trend on YouTube is part of a larger wave of creator monetization features. For example, the recent YouTube Hype feature empowers smaller creators to get discovered and connect with fans, giving fresh talent more opportunities to earn support.
With gift goals now accessible to more live streamers, creators gain another powerful tool to spur donations. Setting specific targets and offering incentives—such as shoutouts, exclusive content, or digital badges—can make supporting a stream feel like a game, increasing the sense of involvement among fans.
For brands, the update means new partnership opportunities. Sponsoring or matching live donation goals can boost visibility and goodwill within influencer communities. The transparent progress bars and public recognition for donors also provide rich hooks for campaign integration.
YouTube says the gift goals expansion currently only applies to U.S.-based creators on mobile, focusing first on vertical live streams. However, the company plans broader availability as it evaluates feedback and engagement metrics from this initial phase. To set up a gift goal, eligible creators tap the bullseye icon during a vertical live stream, set a target amount, and pick a timeframe. Once a goal is met, creators can celebrate and set up a new goal, though only one goal can run at a time.
Creators interested in maximizing the feature can find official guidance from YouTube detailing setup and best practices. Expect additional features—like advanced leaderboards or themed rewards—to join the lineup as YouTube accelerates its focus on viewer-driven monetization.
With competitive donation tools gaining traction, YouTube is likely to push gift goals and similar features to a wider audience soon. As the platform ramps up these interactive options, creators and small brands should prepare to experiment with new ways of activating—and rewarding—their most devoted fans.
