Instagram will now let anyone with over 100,000 followers filter their comments using new tools, according to its official announcement. This upgrade aims to help high-follower creators cut through the flood of replies and connect more easily with their most engaged fans.
Expanded access to these filters lets qualifying accounts sort comments by top engagement, recency, and contributor follower count. The update applies to posts, feed content, and Reels, but is strictly available to those crossing that six-figure follower mark.
With these new controls, creators can prioritize:
Top comments: Displays the replies with the most engagement at the top.
Newest first: Highlights the most recent comments, making real-time responses easier.
Follower count: Surfaces responses from users with the highest follower numbers.
Additional tabs further refine moderation. Accounts can filter comments to show only those from people they follow, verified users, or paying subscribers. This gives creators an edge in focusing on VIP supporters or connecting with other high-influence users.
The upgrade follows Instagram’s ongoing push to deliver more sophisticated tools to its most active users. Offering stricter comment controls is a natural evolution for a platform grappling with viral posts and influencer-scale conversations. Similar efforts show the company's continued investment in optimizing the experience for creators.
For anyone running large brand accounts or building an influencer business, these filters can streamline moderation, protect brand safety, and help nurture high-value relationships. Prioritizing replies from verified or top-follower fans could even create new sponsorship or collaboration opportunities while delivering a more positive comment section experience.
However, the 100,000 follower threshold limits access to only the largest Instagram accounts. Although some smaller creators see engagement worthy of advanced filtering, the update signals Instagram’s focus on supporting power users and public figures most likely to experience comment overload.
Expect similar upgrades to reach additional creator tiers if feedback is strong. In the short term, Instagram will be monitoring usage and gathering data on trends.
Creators surpassing the 100k milestone can start testing these new filters now. For smaller accounts, staying updated on platform changes is critical—future releases may expand eligibility. Instagram’s latest move makes it even clearer that engagement management and fan prioritization are core to its creator roadmap.
