Threads tests algorithm tagging tool for custom feeds

Threads is building a tool that lets users tag its algorithm to tailor their feeds, signaling a new era of customization for creators and brands.

Threads is working on a new feature that would let users directly tag its algorithm to shape what they see in their feed. This move, reported in a recent TechCrunch post, marks a significant shift toward user-driven personalization on Instagram’s X competitor.

How Threads’ tagging tool is expected to work

Reverse engineering reveals that Threads users would interact with an official account, @threads.algo, to specify which topics or content they want more or less of on their timeline. A prompt would guide users to tag the account and communicate their content preferences, with the platform using this information to adjust recommendations in real time.

This tool is currently an internal prototype and is not publicly available. The @threads.algo account is live, followed by several Meta engineers, though the interface remains hidden from standard users. Instagram has not set a launch date or shared a public timeline for a rollout.

If released as described, the update would introduce:

  • Tagging an official account to adjust your feed
  • Real-time configuration of the algorithm
  • Themed controls matching Instagram’s upcoming personalization features

Why Meta and X are racing to personalize feeds

The idea mirrors recent announcements from X, where Elon Musk outlined plans for users to dynamically reconfigure their feeds through tagging X’s AI assistant, Grok. Musk has said the timeline will shift to a fully AI-powered, customizable experience by the end of the year, prompting X to launch a customizable AI algorithm aimed at making feeds more niche and relevant.

Instagram is also rolling out algorithm controls across its main app. An update unveiled this week lets users pick which topics to see more or less of and even search or type their own interest modifiers directly in the app interface.

Meta’s push comes after years of scrutiny—government inquiries and user frustration have pressured social platforms to build more transparent, user-friendly algorithms. Rising competition from platforms like Bluesky, where users select their moderation and algorithmic layers, also puts pressure on incumbents.

Personalization arms race: who stands to gain

For creators and brands relying on organic reach, these changes could introduce new ways to strengthen connections and fine-tune content strategies. Being able to actively tell the feed which signals to prioritize may improve targeting, extend the lifecycle of posts, and reward those who respond quickly to trend shifts.

Threads’ fast-moving feed could benefit especially from in-the-moment curations—if tagging takes off, timely content will find the right audiences, and creators will gain more insight into what works within their communities.

How this blends with Instagram’s redesign

This project also ties to broader platform redesigns. Instagram’s app revamp spotlights Reels and DMs, nudging users toward discovery and private sharing. Personalization tools deployed in both Instagram and Threads signal Meta’s strategy to give users and brands more feed control while driving up engagement with newer formats.

Real-time feedback and future updates

Threads’ tagging interface would reduce frustration for anyone tired of digging through menus. Users could influence recommendations quickly, staying responsive to changing trends or personal taste. However, the system’s success will depend on how intuitive and visible Meta makes these controls.

Meta’s next steps are unclear. There is no confirmation on if, or when, Threads’ tagging concept will launch publicly. Meanwhile, Instagram is already rolling out feed customization to a wider base, and X’s AI-driven feed revamp is scheduled by November. As these changes play out, expect a wave of experimentation as platforms compete to keep creators, brands, and users engaged and in control.
