X rolls out 4K video uploads for creators

X introduces 4K video upload support, promising enhanced content quality for creators and more competition across major social platforms.

Select creators on X can now upload videos in 4K resolution, a move detailed in the official announcement. The upgrade, aimed at increasing viewer engagement and creator retention, positions X as a stronger alternative to established video platforms like YouTube and Vimeo.

How 4K uploads work for premium subscribers

Previously, X’s paying users were capped at uploading 1080p videos with a maximum size of 8GB and up to three hours in length. The arrival of 4K upload support, first rolling out to a group of select creators, indicates that higher file size limits may be on the way for premium subscribers as well.

Key changes included in this feature:

  • Support for 4K video resolution uploads (previously limited to 1080p)
  • Rollout begins with select creators, expected to expand to all premium subscribers
  • Potential adjustments to video file size limits as a result

Stepping up video feature competition

X has sharpened its focus on video since its acquisition by Elon Musk, steadily raising premium upload thresholds in recent years. It introduced longer video durations, and this year it launched a dedicated feed for vertical videos, placed front and center in its mobile apps. These efforts closely mirror those of rivals contending for creators and viewer attention. For example, Meta’s Threads platform is still competing over creator-first features and recently rolled out a major desktop UI update to attract video creators.

Positioning as a video-first contender

By enabling 4K uploads, X is narrowing the gap between itself and platforms synonymous with high-quality video, such as YouTube. This gives creators a reason to publish directly on X, rather than redirect audiences elsewhere, strengthening the platform’s video ecosystem and reducing user churn.

Unlocking higher quality for creators and brands

For creators and marketers, enhanced video resolution means more options for visually rich storytelling, product demos, and educational content. Brands can leverage the improved fidelity to stand out in the feed, aligning with a broader push across social to prioritize high-quality video experiences. Other networks, including LinkedIn, are also reporting surging demand and engagement for video content, as seen in LinkedIn’s record engagement in its 2025 report.

Potential platform challenges ahead

While 4K offers significant creative advantages, higher-resolution uploads can balloon file sizes and strain platform infrastructure. X may need to re-evaluate storage limits, processing speeds, and content moderation workflows to maintain smooth performance for all users.

Expanded tools mean more competition for attention

The rising tide of advanced video capabilities across networks reshapes the content landscape. Brands and creators must keep pace with evolving production standards and feature sets to win engagement—and X’s 4K support raises the bar yet again.

Looking ahead, creators should watch for broader rollout timelines and any future adjustments to subscriber tiers or upload limits. X’s next steps could include further video-focused updates, analytics enhancements, or monetization tools to solidify its newly elevated position among video-first platforms.

As social media video standards climb, flexibility remains crucial. Early adoption of higher-quality features like 4K uploads may be key for those aiming to grow an audience and outpace the ever-adapting competition.
